What Is the REx-PN?

The REx-PN (Regulatory Exam Practical Nurse) is the Canadian practical nursing registration examination used by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) and the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO). BCCNM and CNO partnered with the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) to develop the examination.

The REx-PN assesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed for safe and effective entry-level practical nursing practice. The examination launched in January 2022 and replaced the CPNRE for participating candidates in Ontario and British Columbia.

  • Computer-adaptive format, 90-150 items over up to 4 hours

2,000+ REx-PN Practice Questions

Practice with REx-PN-style questions covering key practical nursing concepts and clinical situations. Each question is paired with a detailed rationale to help you understand the reasoning behind the correct answer and learn from the alternatives.

Train on the question formats the actual REx-PN mirrors

The REx-PN evaluates whether you have the safe, entry-level practical nursing knowledge needed to protect the public, covering areas like basic care and comfort, pharmacological therapies, and reduction of risk potential. Our question bank is built around that exact structure, reflecting the scope of practice expected of a Licensed Practical Nurse. Every question is paired with a full explanation of why each option is right or wrong, because understanding the logic sticks longer than memorizing an answer.

From Nursing Graduates To Licensed Practical Nurses

Hundreds of nurses have used this program to pass the REx-PN. Here's what a few of them have to say.

Frequently Asked Questions

The REx-PN (Regulatory Exam for Practical Nurses) is a licensing exam used by select U.S. state boards of nursing to assess whether practical nursing graduates have the entry-level competency needed to practice safely as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Without passing it, you cannot legally hold a practical nursing license in states that use this exam.

Both exams assess practical nursing competency, but the REx-PN is administered by a different testing body and used by a smaller number of states as an alternative to the NCLEX-PN. The content areas are broadly similar, covering safe and effective care, but the exam format, length, and administering organization differ, so it's important to confirm which exam your target state board requires.

No it's a pass/fail exam based on a defined competency standard. You'll receive a pass or fail result rather than a numeric score.

The exact number can vary, but candidates should expect a fixed set of questions covering core practical nursing competencies, including basic care, pharmacological therapies, and risk reduction. Every question should be approached as if it counts toward your final result.

Once your state board of nursing confirms your eligibility and issues authorization to test, you can schedule your exam date. Most graduates test within a few months of finishing their program, so it's best to confirm your state's specific eligibility timeline early.

You can retake the exam, though waiting periods and retake limits vary by state board, so it's important to check your specific state's policy. Understanding precisely which content area caused the shortfall matters more than simply retesting without a focused review plan.

Most candidates see solid results with 4–6 weeks of focused prep at around 2–3 hours daily. Structured, content-area-by-content-area review tends to outperform unfocused, general studying.

Licensure is state-specific, so passing the REx-PN qualifies you to apply for an LPN license in the state where you tested. If you plan to work in another state later, you'll typically need to apply for licensure by endorsement through that state's board of nursing.
